How to make animated tabs in PowerPoint with the Morph transition

Build a tab navigation bar in PowerPoint and animate it with the Morph transition so each section slides smoothly into view. It suits anyone making business decks, reports or company presentations. You need PowerPoint with Morph, available in Microsoft 365 and PowerPoint 2019 or later.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open PowerPoint and add a blank slide. Set up a simple design with a title area and space at the top or side for your tab bar.

  2. Draw the tab shapes with Insert, Shapes, such as rounded rectangles. Give each tab a label like Home, Services, About and Contact.

  3. Group the tab shapes and place them in the same position on every slide so the bar looks fixed. Duplicate the slide for each tab you need.

  4. On each slide, highlight the active tab with a different fill colour and move the other tabs slightly so the active one stands out.

  5. Add your section content to each slide: text boxes, images, charts or icons. Keep the tab bar in the same spot on all slides.

  6. Select the second slide, go to Transitions and choose Morph. Repeat for every slide in the tab sequence.

  7. Set the transition duration, for example 0.75 to 1 second, and check that the tab bar and content animate the way you want.

  8. Run the slideshow from the start and click through the tabs. Adjust shape positions or names if the Morph animation jumps instead of sliding.

Tips and common mistakes

Morph matches objects by name, so rename key shapes in the Selection Pane to control what moves.

Keep the tab bar in exactly the same place on each slide, or the animation will look wobbly.

Use a short duration around 0.75 seconds so the transition feels smooth, not slow.

Save a copy before experimenting so you can return to a working version.

Questions

Do I need a Microsoft 365 subscription for Morph?

Morph is included in Microsoft 365 and in PowerPoint 2019 and later. Older versions such as PowerPoint 2016 do not have it.

Why does my Morph transition look like a simple fade?

Morph only animates objects it can match between slides. Keep shapes in the same position and rename them in the Selection Pane so PowerPoint recognises them.

Can I reuse the tab design in other presentations?

Yes. Copy the slides into another deck and reapply the Morph transition to each slide.
