What you need
Steps
Open your presentation and add a blank slide. Set the slide background to white or a light color so the colored shapes and icons stand out.
Draw a thin horizontal line across the middle of the slide with Insert > Shapes > Line. This is the timeline base that all five milestones sit on.
Add five small circles on the line with Insert > Shapes > Oval. Hold Shift while dragging to keep them perfectly round, then space them evenly.
Place a text box under each circle with Insert > Text Box. Type one short milestone label per step, such as a month or phase name.
Add an icon or arrow above each circle using Insert > Icons or Insert > Pictures. Keep all icons the same size and style for a clean look.
Color the shapes with Shape Format > Shape Fill and Shape Outline. Use one accent color for the circles and a lighter tint for the arrows.
Select the first circle, its label and its icon together. Hold Ctrl to pick multiple objects, then group them with Ctrl+G.
Repeat the grouping for the other four milestones. Each group now animates as one unit instead of separate pieces.
Select the first group and go to Animations > Add Animation > Fade. Set the Start option to On Click so you control the pace.
Apply the same Fade to the remaining groups and set each Start to After Previous. Press Slide Show to check the order and timing.
Tips and common mistakes
Group each milestone before animating, or you will need to add the effect to every shape separately.
Keep the animation simple with Fade or Wipe so the timeline reads clearly instead of distracting the audience.
Use the same icon size and line weight on all five steps to avoid a messy, uneven slide.
Duplicate the finished slide and edit the text if you need a second timeline, rather than rebuilding it.
Questions
Do I need extra software or add-ins?
No. Everything uses built-in PowerPoint shapes, icons and the Animations tab. A template is optional.
How do I make the steps appear one at a time automatically?
Set the first animation to On Click, then set every later animation to After Previous. The steps will then play in sequence.
Can I use more or fewer than five steps?
Yes. Add or remove circles and keep the spacing even. Group and animate each new milestone the same way.
