What you need

Steps

  1. Open your presentation and create one detail slide for each item you want to show, such as one slide per element. Add a title, short text and an image to each slide.

  2. Go back to your main slide, the table or grid that will act as the menu. Leave space inside each cell or section for a small preview.

  3. On the main slide, go to Insert, then Zoom, then Slide Zoom. Tick the detail slides you made and click Insert.

  4. Drag each zoom thumbnail into its matching cell on the grid. Use the alignment tools under Shape Format to line them up evenly.

  5. Resize the thumbnails so they fit inside the cells without overlapping. Hold Shift while dragging a corner to keep the shape.

  6. Select a zoom thumbnail and open the Zoom tab. Choose Return to Zoom so the audience can click back to the main slide.

  7. Add a Morph transition to the detail slides so the zoom glides in smoothly. Go to Transitions, pick Morph, then Apply To All.

  8. Start the slideshow and click a thumbnail to test the zoom. Check that each detail slide returns to the main slide when clicked.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the zoom thumbnails the same size and spacing so the grid looks clean.

Morph only animates between slides that share similar objects, so reuse the same layout on the main and detail slides.

Test the whole deck in Slide Show mode before presenting, since zoom links do not work in editing view.

Questions

Do I need a newer version of PowerPoint for Slide Zoom?

Slide Zoom is available in Microsoft PowerPoint 2019, Microsoft 365 and later. Older versions and some web versions may not show the Zoom option.

What is the difference between Slide Zoom and Morph?

Slide Zoom creates the clickable link to another slide. Morph handles the smooth animated movement between slides.

Can I use this for a non-interactive presentation?

Yes. You can still click the thumbnails yourself while presenting, or let the slides run in order.
