Steps
Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture in the bottom right corner to go to your profile.
Tap the three-line menu in the top right, then tap Settings and privacy.
Tap Accounts Center, or on older versions tap Security and then Two-factor authentication.
Open Password and security, tap Two-factor authentication, and pick the account you want codes for.
Tap Backup codes, then tap Get backup codes. Enter your Instagram password if the app asks for it.
Save the list straight away. Take a screenshot, use Copy, or store the codes in a password manager.
To use one, open the login screen, choose Try another way when the two-factor prompt appears, and tap Use backup code.
Type a single unused code and confirm to sign in. Repeat with a new code next time you are locked out.
Tips and common mistakes
Each backup code works only once, so cross it off or delete it after you use it.
Go back and generate a fresh set whenever you have used several, since the old list stays valid.
Keep the codes somewhere offline or in a password manager, not in a notes app linked to the same account.
Questions
How many backup codes do I get?
Instagram gives you a set of five one-time codes. Each can be used once, then it stops working.
Why can I not see the Backup codes option?
Two-factor authentication must be turned on first. Enable it under Password and security, then the backup codes option appears.
Do backup codes expire?
They stay valid until you use them or generate a new set. Generating new codes replaces the old list.
