Steps
Turn the sock inside out and pull it over a darning egg, lightbulb or smooth jar. The hole should sit flat and slightly stretched, not bunched up.
Cut a piece of thread about the length of your arm and thread the needle. Knot the end so it will not pull through the fabric.
Push the needle up through the sock from the inside, about 1 cm (half an inch) away from the edge of the hole.
Sew small running stitches back and forth across the hole in one direction, going a little past the edge each time. Keep the lines about 3 mm apart.
Turn the work and weave the needle over and under those lines in the opposite direction, at right angles. This fills the gap with a woven patch.
Keep the stitches close and even, but do not pull the thread tight. Overtight thread puckers the sock and makes the repair lumpy.
Finish with two small stitches on the same spot to lock the thread, then knot it on the inside and trim the loose end.
Turn the sock the right way out and stretch it gently. The patch should feel flat against your foot and the hole should be fully closed.
Tips and common mistakes
Fix small holes early, before they grow into a long tear that is harder to close.
Match your thread to the sock fibre where you can: wool thread for wool socks, polyester for cotton blends.
A lightbulb or a small jar works just as well as a darning egg if you do not own one.
Keep the needle in a pin cushion or a bar of soap while you work so it does not get lost in the sofa.
Questions
Can I fix a sock hole without a needle and thread?
Not really. Iron-on patches and fabric glue do not hold up well on a sock that stretches and gets washed often. A needle and thread is the reliable fix.
Will the repair show?
A little, especially on thin socks. Using thread close to the sock colour and keeping the stitches small makes the patch much less obvious.
Does this work on other clothes?
Yes. The same back and forth weaving works on T-shirt hems, jumper sleeves, leggings and any thin knit fabric with a small hole.
