Steps
Place your paper on a flat surface with good light. Keep a reference picture nearby so you can check the head shape, the crown and the beard as you go.
Draw a light oval for the head, then a vertical centre line down the middle and a horizontal line across the middle. These guides keep the eyes, nose and mouth level.
Sketch the shoulders and robe as two sloping lines from the neck, wider at the base. Keep them faint so you can adjust the width later.
Block in the crown above the head as a curved band with a zigzag top edge. Add a few small circles or dots on the band for jewels.
Place the eyes on the horizontal guide, one on each side of the centre line. Mark a small nose halfway between the eyes and the chin, then a short mouth below it.
Draw the hair falling from under the crown in long curved strands, then add the moustache and a rounded beard that tapers towards the chest.
Refine the outline: shape the eyebrows, eyelids and lips, and give the crown a clear rim. Erase the guide lines once the features sit in the right place.
Go over the main lines with a firmer pencil stroke. Vary the pressure so the face outline stays soft and the crown edge looks crisp.
Shade with the side of a 2B pencil: darker under the crown, along the jaw and in the hair, lighter on the forehead and cheeks. Blend gently with your fingertip or a tissue.
Tips and common mistakes
Draw every early line lightly so mistakes rub out without leaving grooves in the paper.
Check the face against a mirror or turn the paper upside down to spot lopsided features.
Shade in thin layers rather than pressing hard once, so the face keeps its soft look.
Keep the crown slightly narrower than the widest part of the head to avoid a top-heavy look.
Questions
Do I need to be good at drawing faces?
No. The method uses a centre line and a horizontal guide, so you place the features by position rather than by eye. Practise the head oval a few times first if you are new.
Can I use a pen instead of a pencil?
Yes, but you cannot erase the guide lines, so sketch them in pencil first and ink over the final lines. Wait for the ink to dry before rubbing out the pencil.
How do I make the beard look realistic?
Draw the beard as groups of curved strands rather than single hairs, and shade the area under the chin darkest. Leave a few light gaps so it does not look like a solid block.
