Draw the shirt body as a light rectangle that is a little wider at the bottom than at the top. Keep the pencil pressure soft so you can erase these guide lines later.
Round off the top corners for the shoulders. Draw a shallow curve in the middle of the top edge where the neck opening will sit.
Add the collar by drawing a small band around the neck opening, with two curved lines to show the ribbed edge.
Sketch the short sleeves. Angle them outward and down from each shoulder and stop them around mid upper arm.
Draw thin band lines across the end of each sleeve and along the bottom hem of the shirt.
Add jersey folds with a few soft curved lines running from the armpits toward the waist and around the lower body.
Draw the number 10 in the centre of the chest as light block letters. Make both digits the same height and leave even space on each side.
Erase the guide lines, then go over the final outlines with a darker pencil or a fineliner so the shape reads clearly.
Shade lightly under the collar, inside the sleeves and along the folds. Shade one side of the number 10 so it lifts off the shirt.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your first lines light, because a heavy pencil smudges when you rub it out.
Check the width of the number against the shirt before you darken the outlines, since a digit that is too wide looks off centre.
Shade in one direction only and keep the light coming from one side for a clean finish.
Draw a faint vertical centre line first if the two sides of the shirt keep coming out uneven.

Do I need special art pencils for this?
No. A normal HB pencil, an eraser and plain paper are enough. A softer 2B pencil simply gives you darker, smoother shading.
How do I keep the jersey symmetrical?
Draw a light vertical line down the middle of the paper first. Measure the same distance from it for each shoulder, sleeve and side seam.
How long does the drawing take?
