What you need

Steps

  1. Find a clear reference photo of Vidyasagar and study the tilt of his head. Note where the nose, eyes and ear sit in the three quarter turn.

  2. Draw a light oval for the head, then add a vertical curve down the middle of the face. This curve shifts toward the far side in a three quarter view.

  3. Mark a horizontal line for the eyes halfway down the head. Add lines for the nose and mouth below it, spaced evenly.

  4. Place the near eye fully and the far eye narrower and closer to the edge of the face. Keep both on the same eye line.

  5. Sketch the nose with the bridge curving toward the far side. Draw the mouth slightly off centre to match the turn.

  6. Outline the jaw, chin and the far cheek, then add the ear on the near side. Check the ear sits between the eye line and the nose base.

  7. Add his hair, the high forehead and the collar or shawl of his clothing. Keep the lines light so you can adjust them.

  8. Darken the final outlines with a 2B pencil and erase the guide lines. Add shading under the chin and along the far cheek.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep every early line light so mistakes are easy to erase.

Check the drawing in a mirror to spot a lopsided face.

The far eye is always narrower than the near eye in a three quarter view.

Draw the hair in simple blocks first, then add strands.

Questions

Do I need to be good at drawing to try this?

Basic face drawing helps. If you are new, practise the oval and eye line a few times before adding details.

What pencil should I use?

An HB pencil works for the outline and a 2B for darker lines and shading. Keep both sharp.

How long should the sketch take?

About 30 minutes for a light portrait. Take longer if you want clean shading.
