What you need
Steps
Draw a light horizon line across the middle of your paper. This is your eye level, and everything in the drawing relates to it.
Pick a vanishing point on the horizon line. Mark it lightly with a dot so you can erase it later.
Draw a square for the front face of a cube, then draw light lines from its corners back toward the vanishing point.
Close the back edges of the cube where the perspective lines meet, then erase the long guide lines.
Decide where the light comes from, for example the top left. Keep that direction the same for every shape you draw.
Shade the side facing away from the light darkest. Shade the top or lit side lightest, leaving the paper mostly bare.
Add a soft shadow on the ground under the cube, stretching away from the light source.
Blend the shading with a stump or tissue, then go back in with the pencil to darken the deepest shadow edges.
Repeat the same steps for a sphere and a cylinder so you practice curved shading and perspective.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your pencil lines light at first so mistakes erase cleanly.
Squint at your drawing to check that the dark and light areas read clearly.
Shade in one direction and build up layers slowly instead of pressing hard.
Keep the light direction the same on every shape or the drawing will look flat.
Questions
Do I need special pencils to start?
No. A standard HB pencil works fine. A 2B pencil makes darker shadows easier once you get comfortable.
What is a vanishing point?
It is the spot on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to meet. Placing it correctly is what makes a drawing look 3D.
How long should I practice each day?
Short daily sessions of 15 to 20 minutes beat one long session. Draw the same cube a few times to build control.
