What you need
Steps
Sketch the kidney outline as a bean shape, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. Keep the notch on the left side and press very lightly so you can erase it later.
Mark the notch, called the hilum, then draw a short tube running down from it. This tube is the ureter and it leaves the kidney toward the bladder.
Draw the renal artery and renal vein entering the hilum just above the ureter. Give them slightly different widths so they are easy to tell apart.
Draw an inner line that follows the outer edge to mark the renal capsule, then a second band inside it for the cortex.
Draw the medulla as the inner region and add several triangles pointing inward. These are the medullary pyramids.
Add the renal columns as thin strips of cortex running down between the pyramids. Keep them narrow and evenly spaced.
Draw the renal pelvis as a funnel shape at the hilum, then small cup shapes around each pyramid tip for the calyces. Join the pelvis to the ureter.
Go over the finished outline with the dark pencil, erase the light guide lines and keep the inner lines thinner than the outer edge.
Label each part with a straight line drawn with the ruler: capsule, cortex, renal column, medullary pyramid, calyx, pelvis, renal artery, renal vein and ureter.
Tips and common mistakes
Draw everything in light pencil first, because dark lines are hard to erase without smudging the paper.
Keep the pyramid triangles pointing toward the pelvis, which is the most common mistake in kidney diagrams.
Use a ruler for label lines and write labels in the same direction so the diagram reads easily.
Sharpen the dark pencil before the final outline to get crisp, even edges.
Questions
Which parts should I label on a kidney diagram?
Label the renal capsule, cortex, renal column, medullary pyramid, calyx, renal pelvis, renal artery, renal vein and ureter. These are the parts most school syllabuses ask for.
Can I colour the diagram?
Yes. Light shading works well, with one colour for the cortex and a slightly darker one for the medulla and pyramids. Keep labels in black so they stay readable.
How do I make the shape look right?
Keep the kidney wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, with one clear notch on the inner side. Draw it light, check the proportions, then darken.
