What you need
Steps
Place your compass or round template on the paper and draw one clean circle. Keep the line light so you can erase it later.
Draw a light horizon line across the lower third of the circle. This line separates the sky from the water.
Sketch the sun as a half circle sitting on the horizon line. Keep it small so the sky has room around it.
Draw the pier starting at the bottom edge of the circle. Use two lines that get closer together as they move toward the horizon to create perspective.
Add the pier posts as short vertical lines along both sides. Make the posts near the bottom taller and the far posts smaller.
Draw a few thin horizontal lines on the water for ripples. Space them wider near the horizon and closer near the bottom.
Shade the sky with light pencil strokes, pressing harder near the sun and lighter toward the top of the circle.
Shade the water darker than the sky and leave a bright gap under the sun for its reflection.
Darken the pier and posts so they stand out against the lighter water. Add a soft shadow under the pier.
Erase any stray marks and gently clean up the circle edge. Blend the shading with your finger or a tissue if it looks patchy.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your first sketch lines light so mistakes are easy to erase.
Shade in one direction and build up layers slowly instead of pressing hard at once.
Make the pier lines converge toward a single point on the horizon for a believable perspective.
Questions
Do I need a compass to draw the circle?
No. You can trace around a cup, a bowl or any round object that fits your paper.
Can I use a pen instead of a pencil?
Yes, but a pencil is easier because you can erase and adjust the shading as you go.
How long does the drawing take?
Most beginners finish in about 30 minutes. Take longer if you want smoother shading.
