What you need

Steps

  1. Draw a light almond outline for the eye shape. Keep the line faint so you can adjust it later.

  2. Add a circle inside for the iris, sitting slightly under the top lid so the lid overlaps it.

  3. Mark the pupil in the centre of the iris and a small white highlight where the light hits.

  4. Sketch the upper lid crease and a thin lower lid line just below the eye.

  5. Darken the pupil and the top of the iris with your softest pencil, leaving the highlight clean.

  6. Shade the iris in thin lines from the pupil outward, then blend lightly for a smooth look.

  7. Shade the white of the eye with very light grey, darker near the corners and under the top lid.

  8. Draw the eyelashes in short curved strokes, longer at the outer corner, and add a soft shadow above the lid.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep your pencil sharp for lashes and iris lines, and use the side of the lead for soft shading.

Leave the highlight pure white; erasing it later is harder than avoiding it.

Build shading in light layers instead of pressing hard, so the paper does not shine.

Questions

Do I need special pencils?

No. A normal HB pencil works, but a softer 2B or 4B makes the pupil and lashes darker with less pressure.

Why does my eye look flat?

Usually the shading is even all over. Darken the top of the iris and the crease, and keep the highlight and lower lid lighter.

How long should I practise?

Short daily sessions of 15 to 20 minutes on the same eye shape help more than one long session.
