What you need
Steps
Lightly sketch the eye shape with an HB pencil. Mark the upper and lower lid lines and place a small almond shape for the tear duct at the inner corner.
Draw a circle for the iris so it sits partly under the upper lid. Check that both eyes on your page match in size and angle.
Add the pupil in the centre of the iris and mark where the light hits the eye. Leave that highlight area blank for now.
Darken the upper lid line with a 4B pencil. Make it thicker in the middle and thinner at the corners, then sketch the lower lid more faintly.
Fill the iris with light strokes using a 2B pencil. Add darker streaks radiating from the pupil outward to build texture.
Shade the pupil with your darkest pencil, an 8B, and keep the highlight clean. Blend the iris gently with a stump or tissue.
Shade the white of the eye lightly near the corners and under the upper lid. Leave the middle bright so the eye looks round.
Draw the eyelashes in curved strokes that follow the lid direction. Make them longer in the middle and shorter at the corners.
Add shading around the eye socket and crease with a 2B pencil. Blend softly so the skin looks smooth, not smudged.
Lift small highlights with the kneaded eraser on the iris and inner corner. Sharpen any edges and check the overall contrast.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your hand light at the start so mistakes are easy to erase.
Sharpen your pencil often for fine lashes and iris lines.
Blend in small circles and stop before the shading turns muddy.
Place the highlight before darkening the iris so you never have to erase it.
Questions
Which pencils do I need for a realistic eye?
A set from HB to 8B covers it. HB is for the outline, 2B and 4B for shading, and 6B or 8B for the pupil and darkest lashes.
How do I keep the eye from looking flat?
Keep a clear highlight in the iris and shade the white of the eye near the corners. Strong dark and light contrast makes the eye look round.
Can a beginner draw this?
Yes. Start with the outline and iris, then add shading in layers. Expect the first tries to look rough and keep practising the proportions.
