What you need
Steps
Draw a wide oval in the middle of your page for the pumpkin body. Keep the line light so you can erase it later.
Add four or five curved lines running from the top centre of the oval down to the bottom. These become the pumpkin ribs.
Sketch a short, thick stalk on top, slightly off centre. Draw two small curved lines down from it to suggest where the ribs meet.
Draw the witch hat: an oval brim that sits across the top of the pumpkin, then a cone that bends to one side near the tip.
Place a small oval on the hat for the bat's body, then add two pointed wings and two tiny ears. Keep the bat simple.
Sketch the jack-o'-lantern face. Use two triangles for eyes, a small triangle for the nose and a wide smile with two or three square teeth.
Erase the light construction lines you no longer need, then go over the final outlines with a firmer pencil line.
Shade with the 2B pencil along the ribs, under the hat brim and around the base of the pumpkin. Blend each patch with your finger or a tissue.
Colour the eyes, nose and smile with yellow. Leave the middle of each shape pale and darken the edges so it looks like a glow.
Tips and common mistakes
Shade with the flat side of the lead instead of the point to get smooth, even grey tones.
Leave a thin strip of white paper on each pumpkin rib so the shape looks rounded.
Draw the bat and hat smaller than you think you need, otherwise they overwhelm the pumpkin.
Build yellow in two or three light layers rather than pressing hard once, which keeps the colour clean.
Questions
Do I need special drawing pencils for this?
No. A normal HB pencil for outlines and a softer 2B for shading is enough, plus any yellow pencil or marker for the glow.
How do I stop the shading looking messy?
Shade in small circles and keep the darkest tones in the creases between the ribs. Blend gently with a tissue before adding more graphite.
Can I draw this without the witch hat or bat?
Yes. The pumpkin and face work on their own, so skip those steps if you want a plain jack-o'-lantern.
