What you need
Steps
Start with a light oval for the head. Sketch it softly so you can adjust the shape later.
Draw a vertical center line down the oval and a horizontal line across the middle. These guide where the features sit.
Place the eyes on the horizontal line, leaving about one eye width between them. Sketch each eye as an almond or circle shape.
Add the eyebrows just above the eyes, following the curve of the upper lid. Keep both brows level with each other.
Draw the nose on the center line, with the base about halfway between the eyes and the chin. Mark the nostrils and bridge lightly.
Sketch the mouth below the nose, with the top lip line about one third of the way down from nose to chin.
Add the ears on each side, from the eye line down to the nose base. Keep them roughly the same size.
Draw the hairline across the top of the forehead, then sketch the hair shape over the skull.
Erase the guide lines and darken the final feature lines. Refine the eyes, nose and mouth for your chosen style.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your pencil strokes light at first so mistakes are easy to erase.
Measure spacing by comparing features to each other, such as the gap between the eyes.
Change eye shapes like round, almond or downturned to give each face a different look.
Questions
Do I need special pencils?
No. A normal graphite pencil and eraser work fine. The video uses a colored pencil, but any pencil will do.
Can I use this method for male faces?
Yes. The same head shape and feature placement steps apply. You can widen the jaw and square the chin for a male face.
How long does one face take?
A first attempt may take 45 minutes or more. With practice the same steps take about 20 minutes.
