What you need
Steps
Draw a light vertical centre line on the paper. This keeps the eyes, nose and mouth lined up as you build the face.
Sketch the oval face shape and a smaller oval for the chin. Keep the lines faint so you can erase them later.
Place the eyes on the centre line, spaced about one eye width apart. Add curved brows above them.
Draw the nose as a soft curve and the lips as a small bow shape below it. Mark the hairline across the forehead.
Add Durga's details: a third eye on the forehead, a bindi, earrings and the crown outline above the hair.
Colour the skin with a light watercolor pencil, then touch it with a damp water brush to blend. Work in small areas.
Fill the hair, crown and jewellery in darker shades. Let each layer dry before adding the next.
Go over the main outlines with a fine liner or dark pencil once the paint is dry. Erase any leftover guide lines.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the pencil sketch very light so the watercolor layers stay clean.
Test colours on scrap paper first, since watercolor pencils look darker once wet.
Let each wash dry fully before adding more colour to avoid muddy patches.
Questions
Can I do this without a water brush?
Yes. A small round brush dipped in clean water works the same way. Blot it on a cloth so it is damp, not dripping.
What paper should I use?
Watercolor paper of around 200 gsm or heavier handles the water without buckling. Thin printer paper will wrinkle.
Do I need to draw the face perfectly first?
No. Light guide lines and small corrections are normal. Erase gently and redraw until the proportions look right.
