Steps
Place your reference picture where you can see it easily. Tape the A3 paper to a board so it stays flat while you draw.
With the HB pencil, draw a light oval for the face. Keep the lines faint so you can adjust them later.
Mark a vertical centre line down the oval. Add light horizontal lines for the eyes, nose and mouth.
Draw the eyes, nose and lips on those guide lines. Check the spacing against your reference before going on.
Sketch the hair falling on both sides of the face in loose curved strokes. Keep the strands simple at this stage.
Add the crown above the head. Draw the main shape first, then the small decorative details inside it.
Draw the neck, shoulders and the top of the jewellery. Keep the shoulders level with each other.
Switch to the 2B pencil and darken the final outline. Follow the same lines with a firm, steady hand.
Erase the guide lines and any stray marks. Check the whole drawing from a step back before you finish.
Tips and common mistakes
Draw the face first and get the proportions right before adding the crown and hair.
Keep your pencil sharp and use light pressure so mistakes erase cleanly.
Hold the paper up to a mirror to spot a lopsided face or crown.
Use 300 gsm paper if you plan to paint or use oil pastels on top.
Questions
Do I need to be good at drawing to follow this?
No. The outline is built from simple shapes and guide lines, so a beginner can copy it step by step.
Can I colour the drawing after the outline?
Yes. The 300 gsm watercolour paper takes paint and oil pastels well once the pencil outline is done.
What if my face looks uneven?
Check the centre line and the eye level lines again. Small shifts in those guides fix most uneven faces.
