How to do a 600 mile first service on a sport bike

The 600 mile service is the first big check on a new sport bike, and most of it you can do in your own garage. You will change the oil and filter, check the chain, tires, brakes and fasteners, and log the job. It suits riders with basic tools and a copy of the owner's manual.

What you need

Steps

  1. Warm the engine for a few minutes, then switch it off. Warm oil drains better and carries out more break-in metal. Put on gloves and slide an oil pan under the drain plug.

  2. Undo the drain plug with a socket and let the oil drain fully. Fit a new crush washer, refit the plug and torque it to the figure in your manual.

  3. Spin off the old filter with a filter wrench. Wipe the mating face clean, rub a little new oil on the new filter's rubber ring and screw it on hand tight only.

  4. Fill with the oil type and amount your manual lists, then run the engine for 30 seconds. Wait a minute, hold the bike upright and check the level in the sight glass.

  5. Check chain slack halfway along the lower run. Most sport bikes want 25 to 35 mm, so confirm your spec, adjust at the rear axle and lube the chain.

  6. Check both tires cold against the pressure sticker on the swingarm or in the manual and top them up. New tires may still be scrubbing in.

  7. Go over the fasteners: axle nuts, brake caliper bolts, engine mounts and fairing bolts. Check the brake fluid level and the clutch cable free play.

  8. Reset the service reminder if your dash has one, then write the date and mileage in your logbook and keep the oil and filter receipts.

Tips and common mistakes

Always fit a new crush washer, or the drain plug will seep oil.

Do not overfill the engine. Too much oil can foam and blow past the seals.

Take used oil and the old filter to a recycling centre, never down a drain.

Keep receipts for parts, since they help if you ever claim on the warranty.

Questions

Will doing the 600 mile service myself void my warranty?

In most places you may service the bike yourself as long as you use the right parts and keep receipts. Check your warranty terms first, because some brands want an approved shop to stamp the book.

Can I ride past 600 miles before the first service?

A little over is normally fine, but do not stretch it far. The first oil load carries the most break-in metal, so change it close to the stated mileage.

How much oil does a sport bike take?

Most 600cc to 1000cc sport bikes take around 2.5 to 3.5 litres with a filter change. Use the exact figure in your manual and confirm with the sight glass.
