Steps
Park on level ground and switch the engine off. Let it sit for a few minutes so the oil drains back into the sump and the reading is accurate.
Open the bonnet and find the dipstick. It has a yellow or orange loop handle and sits on the top of the engine.
Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean with the rag, then push it all the way back in until it seats.
Pull it out again and look at the oil line. It should sit between the two marks, closer to the upper one.
If the level is near or below the lower mark, unscrew the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
Fit a funnel into the filler neck and pour in a small amount of the correct oil, about half a litre at a time.
Wait a minute, then check the dipstick again. Repeat until the level reaches the upper mark, but do not overfill.
Refit the filler cap firmly and push the dipstick fully home. Wipe up any spilled oil on the engine.
Tips and common mistakes
Never check the oil straight after a drive, as hot oil can burn your hands and gives a false reading.
Overfilling is worse than running slightly low, so add in small amounts and recheck each time.
A milky or very black, gritty dipstick reading is a reason to see a mechanic rather than just topping up.
Questions
How often should I check the engine oil?
Check it at least once a month and before long trips. A healthy engine should not use much oil between services.
Which oil should I use?
Use the grade and specification printed in your owner's manual or on the oil filler cap. Mixing grades is best avoided.
The oil light came on. Can I just top up?
Stop the engine safely and check the level first. A red oil pressure light means switch off and get help, not drive on.
