How to fix an iPhone that is not receiving text messages

When texts stop arriving on your iPhone, a few settings can quietly block or filter them. This guide walks you through refreshing Airplane Mode, checking iMessage and RCS, and reconnecting to your carrier so messages come through again. It suits any iPhone user and takes about 10 minutes.

Steps

  1. Open Control Center, tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it on, wait about 10 seconds, then tap it again to switch it off. This forces the phone to re-register with the network.

  2. Go to Settings, tap Messages, then iMessage. Turn the switch off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on to reactivate the service.

  3. On the same Messages screen, tap Send & Receive and untick every email address so only your phone number is selected.

  4. Scroll down the Messages settings and turn off Screen Unknown Senders and Filter Spam so texts are not being sorted into another folder.

  5. Still in Messages, switch on Retry as Text Message, then toggle RCS Messaging off and back on to give it a fresh start.

  6. Open Settings, tap Cellular, select your line and turn it off. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on to reconnect your eSIM.

  7. If texts still do not arrive, go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, then Reset Network Settings and confirm.

  8. Finish with a force restart: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

Tips and common mistakes

Reset Network Settings also erases your saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, so have those handy before you tap it.

Ask someone on a different carrier to text you, since a problem on one network will not show up with a single contact.

Check that the sender is not on your blocked list under Settings, Messages, Blocked Contacts.

If nothing works, call your carrier and confirm texting is enabled on your plan and that there is no outage in your area.

Questions

Will resetting network settings delete my photos or apps?

No. It only clears saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth connections and carrier settings. Your photos, apps and messages stay on the phone.

Why do some texts arrive and others do not?

Filtering is the usual cause. Unknown senders and spam filters can push messages into a separate folder, so check those settings and your junk list.

Should I turn off iMessage completely?

Only as a test. Turning iMessage off and back on refreshes the service, but leaving it off means you lose iMessage features with other Apple users.
