Steps
Unplug the washer or switch off its power at the breaker before you start. Never reach into the drum while the machine is powered.
Lift the removable agitator straight up and out of the drum. Set it aside on a towel so dirty water does not run across the floor.
Wipe the agitator with a cloth and warm soapy water, then scrub the fins and the hollow center with an old toothbrush. Rinse it clean.
Look inside the drum where the agitator sat. Wipe out any lint, hair and grit with a damp cloth, then dry the area.
Run a hot water cycle with no clothes. Add about 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum, or use a washer cleaning tablet as the label directs.
While the drum fills, wipe the top rim, the lid underside and the detergent and fabric softener drawers with a damp cloth.
Let the cycle finish, then run a second hot rinse cycle to flush out loosened residue.
Pull the drain pump filter if your model has one, usually behind a small panel at the front bottom. Catch the water in a bucket, rinse the filter and refit it.
Dry the drum and the agitator with a clean cloth, then push the agitator back down until it seats firmly. Leave the lid open to air out.
Tips and common mistakes
Clean the washer once a month to stop smells and brown spots coming back.
Skip bleach and vinegar together in the same cycle, since they cancel each other out and can give off fumes.
Leave the lid open between loads so the drum dries and mold does not grow.
Wipe up spilled water right away, since a wet floor near a plugged-in appliance is a shock risk.
Questions
How often should I deep clean my washer?
About once a month for normal use. Clean it sooner if clothes come out smelling musty or you see brown marks on light fabrics.
Does this work on other Whirlpool washers?
Yes. The steps fit most newer Whirlpool and Maytag top-load models with the 2-in-1 removable agitator. Check your manual for the filter location on your model.
Can I use bleach instead of vinegar?
You can, but follow the label and never mix bleach with vinegar. Vinegar is the safer choice for a routine monthly clean.
