How to clean a Beko washing machine filter when it is full of water

Clear a blocked filter on a Beko WTG741M1W when the machine will not drain or pump out. You will drain the trapped water, remove coins and lint from the coin basket, and refit the filter so the washer drains again. Suits any beginner with a few towels and a shallow tray.

Steps

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it from the wall. Pull it out slightly so you can reach the small filter door at the bottom front.

  2. Spread towels on the floor and slide a shallow tray under the filter door. Expect several litres of dirty water to come out.

  3. Open the small round or rectangular flap at the bottom front. If there is a thin drain hose behind it, pull it out and point it into the tray.

  4. Pull the plug from the end of the drain hose and let the water run into the tray. Refit the plug when the tray is full, empty it, and repeat.

  5. Turn the large round filter cap anticlockwise by hand. If it is stiff, grip it with a cloth. Keep the tray under it as you unscrew.

  6. Pull the filter out slowly and tip the remaining water into the bucket. Look inside the pump housing for coins, hair clips, lint and fluff.

  7. Pick out the debris by hand. Scrub the filter screen under warm running water with an old toothbrush until the mesh is clear.

  8. Check the pump impeller behind the opening turns freely. Remove anything wrapped around it, then wipe the housing clean.

  9. Push the filter back in and screw the cap clockwise until it is firm. Do not overtighten it. Refit the drain hose plug and close the flap.

  10. Run a short rinse or drain cycle and watch for leaks at the filter door. If water still sits in the drum, check the filter again.

Tips and common mistakes

Clean the filter every two to three months, or sooner if the machine drains slowly.

Keep the machine unplugged while your hands are inside the pump housing.

Loose coins and bra wires are the usual cause of a pump that will not drain.

If the filter cap will not seal, check the rubber O ring for grit before refitting.

Questions

Why is there so much water behind the filter?

The filter sits at the lowest point of the drum, so any water that will not pump out collects there. Drain it with the small hose first to avoid a flood.

The machine still will not drain after cleaning. What next?

Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure the impeller turns freely. If it still fails, the pump itself may need replacing.

How often should I clean it?

Every two to three months is enough for most homes. Wash more often or with pets and you may need to do it monthly.
