Steps
Park the bike on level ground on its side stand or centre stand with the engine off. Let the chain cool before you touch it.
Wipe the chain with a rag so you can see the links, pins and rollers clearly. Dirt hides wear.
Look along the chain for rust, stiff links or missing O-rings. A chain that will not flex freely is a sign of wear.
Check the chain slack by pushing it up and down at the middle of the lower run. Compare it with the free play in your owner's manual.
Inspect the rear sprocket teeth. Worn teeth hook forward like shark fins or look sharp and thin at the tips.
Check the front sprocket the same way if it is visible. Look for hooked or pointed teeth.
Pull the chain away from the back of the rear sprocket. If it lifts more than a few millimetres, the chain is stretched.
Look for a loose or missing master link clip. A missing clip can let the chain come off while riding.
If you find hooked teeth, a stretched chain or stiff links, replace the chain and both sprockets as a set.
Tips and common mistakes
Always change the chain and sprockets together. A new chain on worn sprockets wears out fast.
Check the chain after rain or a long ride, since water and grit speed up wear.
Keep the chain clean and lubricated and check slack every few hundred kilometres.
Never put your fingers near the chain or sprocket with the engine running.
Questions
How often should I check my bike chain?
Check slack and look over the chain and sprockets about every 500 km, and after riding in rain or on dusty roads.
Can I ride with a worn chain?
No. A worn chain can slip, jam or snap, which can lock the rear wheel. Replace it before it gets that bad.
Do I have to replace the sprockets too?
Yes, if the teeth are hooked or pointed. A new chain on old sprockets will wear out quickly.
