Steps

  1. Park on a flat surface, put the car in Park and switch the wipers off so they are fully down at the base of the windshield.

  2. On the touchscreen open Controls, then Service, then tap Wiper Service Mode. The arms move up and stop partway across the glass.

  3. Get out and lay a towel on the windshield under the arm you are working on, so a dropped arm cannot crack the glass.

  4. Lift the arm away from the glass until it holds itself up, then look at the underside of the blade connector.

  5. Press the release tab on the connector and slide the old blade off the end of the arm. Keep the arm steady.

  6. Lay the old blade beside the new one and check the lengths match. The driver and passenger blades are different sizes, so keep them in the right order.

  7. Slide the new blade onto the arm until the tab clicks into place, then tug it gently to confirm it is locked.

  8. Lower the arm slowly until the blade rests flat on the glass, then repeat steps 3 to 7 on the other side.

  9. Back in the car, turn off Wiper Service Mode, then press the washer button once and watch both blades sweep cleanly.

Tips and common mistakes

Never let a wiper arm snap back down onto bare glass, since that is the most common way owners crack a windshield.

Replace both blades at the same time so the pair wears evenly and clears the glass the same way.

If the wipers will not enter service mode, check the car is in Park and that the setting is under Controls, then Service.

Clean the glass with glass cleaner after fitting new blades to remove old rubber film and stop smearing.

Questions

How often should I change wiper blades on a Tesla?

Most owners change them every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if the blades chatter, streak or leave patches of water. Hot sun and dusty air wear rubber faster.

What size wiper blades does a Model 3 or Model Y take?

The two sides use different lengths, so buy a set listed for your exact model and year rather than guessing. Check the Tesla parts page or your owner's manual for the fitment.

Why are my new wipers still streaking?

Streaks usually come from dirty glass or a bent arm, not the blade. Clean the windshield properly and check that the arm presses the blade flat along its whole length.
