Steps
Park the bike on level ground and run the engine for two or three minutes. Switch it off and let it sit so the oil is warm but not hot.
Slide the drain pan under the engine and find the drain bolt on the crankcase. On the HLX 150X the oil strainer sits behind a separate cap close by.
Loosen the drain bolt with the right socket, then unscrew it by hand and let all the old oil drain out.
Remove the oil strainer cap and pull out the screen. Wipe it clean, check for metal bits, then refit it.
Fit a new washer on the drain bolt and screw it back in by hand. Tighten it firmly with the socket, but do not force it.
Pour in 20W50 oil through the filler hole using a funnel. Add most of it, then stop and check the level before adding more.
Hold the bike upright and check the dipstick. Wipe it, rest it in the hole without screwing it down, and read the level.
Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Switch off, look for leaks around the drain bolt, and top up if the level has dropped.
Tips and common mistakes
TVS recommends the first oil change between 500 and 750 km, so do it early on a new bike.
Do not overtighten the drain bolt or you can strip the thread in the crankcase.
Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it to a garage or recycling point, never down a drain.
A little fine metal fuzz on the strainer is normal on a first change, but large chips are a reason to get the engine checked.
Questions
Which oil should I use in a TVS HLX 150X?
Use a 20W50 motorcycle engine oil that meets the rating in your owner's manual. Do not use car oil, because bike engines share oil with the clutch.
Does this bike have an oil filter?
No. The HLX 150X has no paper filter. It uses a metal oil strainer or screen that you remove and clean instead of replacing.
How often should I change the oil?
Follow the service book for your bike. As a rule, change it every few thousand kilometres, and sooner if you ride in dusty conditions.
