Steps
Park the scooter on level ground and let the engine run for 2 to 3 minutes to warm the oil. Then switch it off and put on gloves.
Place a drain pan under the engine drain bolt. Remove the oil filler cap or dipstick so the oil can flow out freely.
Put a 17mm socket on the drain bolt and turn it counterclockwise. Keep pressure on the bolt as it loosens, then pull it out.
Let the old oil drain completely into the pan. Check the drain bolt washer for damage and replace it if it is crushed.
Wipe the drain bolt and its mating surface clean. Refit the washer and thread the bolt in by hand, then snug it with the socket. Do not overtighten.
Use a funnel with a long stem to pour in the oil grade your manual specifies. Add about the listed capacity, then check the dipstick or sight glass.
Refit the filler cap or dipstick. Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds, then switch off and look for leaks around the drain bolt.
Check the oil level again on level ground and top up if needed. Pour the used oil into a sealed container and take it to a recycling center.
Tips and common mistakes
Warm oil drains faster, but the engine, exhaust and old oil can be hot enough to burn you, so wear gloves and keep your hands clear.
Use the oil grade and capacity in your owner's manual, not another rider's recommendation, because 50cc and 150cc models differ.
Check the oil level after the first short ride and look for drips under the scooter.
Do not overtighten the drain bolt, because it can strip the threads in the engine case.
Questions
How much oil does a 50cc or 150cc scooter take?
It varies by model, so check your owner's manual or the sticker under the seat. Add oil gradually and use the dipstick or sight glass, not a guess.
Can I use car oil in my scooter?
Use the grade and type your manual lists. Some scooters need motorcycle-specific oil, so check before buying.
How often should I change scooter oil?
Follow the service interval in your manual, and change it sooner if the oil looks dirty or the scooter is used for short trips.
