How to change the engine oil and filter on a diesel truck

Swap the oil and filter on a diesel pickup yourself and save a workshop trip. The job is the same as a petrol car, except you use oil made for diesel engines because soot builds up fast. It suits anyone with basic hand tools and a level spot to work.

Steps

  1. Run the engine for a few minutes so the oil warms up and flows better, then park on level ground and switch it off.

  2. Chock the rear wheels and raise the front on ramps or axle stands. Never get under a truck held only by a jack.

  3. Slide the drain pan under the sump, undo the drain plug with a socket and let the old oil drain completely.

  4. Spin the old filter off with a filter wrench. Check the old rubber gasket came away with it and wipe the mating face clean.

  5. Fit a new washer on the drain plug, screw it back in and tighten it snugly. Stop before you strip the threads.

  6. Rub a little fresh oil around the new filter gasket, spin it on by hand until it touches, then give it about three quarters of a turn more.

  7. Pour the new diesel oil in through the filler with a funnel, starting about a litre under the listed capacity.

  8. Start the engine for a minute and watch for leaks at the plug and filter, then shut it off and let it settle.

  9. Check the dipstick and top up to the full mark. Reset the oil life monitor if your truck has one.

  10. Take the used oil to a recycling centre. Don't pour it down a drain.

Tips and common mistakes

Use oil that meets the diesel spec in your owner's manual, not leftover petrol-car oil, because soot thickens it fast.

Stick to the service interval. Soot is abrasive and old oil wears the engine.

Hand-tighten the filter only. An over-tightened filter is hard to remove next time and can leak.

Double-check that the old filter gasket came off. Two gaskets stacked together leak badly.

Questions

How much oil does a diesel truck take?

It varies a lot between engines, often 10 to 13 litres on a big pickup. Check your owner's manual and add most of it first, then top up slowly.

Can I use normal petrol engine oil?

No. Diesel oil is formulated to handle soot and higher pressures, so use an oil rated for diesel engines.

How often should I change it?

Follow the interval in your manual, and shorten it if you tow or drive short trips often.
