How to build an animated 5-Step strategy slide in PowerPoint

You will build a five-card process infographic in PowerPoint, style it with gradients and bevels, add icons and labels, then animate each card in order. It suits beginners who know the basics of inserting shapes. You need PowerPoint on desktop with a blank slide.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open a blank 16:9 slide and set a dark or light background that contrasts with your cards. This makes the gradient fills easier to judge later.

  2. Insert a rectangle and a smaller shape such as a rounded rectangle or circle. Select both, then go to Shape Format and click Merge Shapes to combine them into one custom card shape.

  3. Right-click the merged shape, choose Format Shape, and set a gradient fill with two close shades. Add a soft outer shadow and a slight 3D bevel for depth.

  4. Copy the finished card four times with Ctrl+D so you have five cards. Use Align and Distribute in the Shape Format tab to space them evenly across the slide.

  5. Change the gradient color on each card so the five steps read as a sequence. Keep the same style and only shift the hue.

  6. Insert an icon into each card and add a short step label plus a number. Align icons to the same height so the row looks tidy.

  7. Select all five cards, open the Animations tab, and apply a Fade or Fly In entrance. Set Start to On Click for the first card and After Previous for the rest.

  8. Open the Animation Pane and adjust each duration and delay so the cards appear one after another in a smooth sequence.

  9. Press Shift+F5 to preview the slide from the current slide and check the timing. Fix any card that appears too early or too late.

Tips and common mistakes

Merge Shapes only works when two or more shapes are selected at once, so select both before clicking it.

Keep gradient stops close in color, since a wide contrast looks muddy on a small card.

Use After Previous for all but the first animation so the sequence runs without extra clicks.

Group each card with its icon and label before animating so they move as one object.

Questions

Do I need extra add-ins for this slide?

No. Everything uses built-in PowerPoint tools: Merge Shapes, Format Shape, Icons and the Animations tab.

Why does my merged shape look flat?

The bevel and shadow settings are easy to miss. Open Format Shape, go to Effects, and add both a soft shadow and a small 3D bevel.

Can I reuse the slide as a template?

Yes. Save the finished slide as a PowerPoint template or duplicate it and swap the text and icons for each new process.
