What you need

Steps

  1. Open a new document in Google Docs or Word and choose a simple one-page resume layout. Add sections for contact details, objective, education, experience and skills.

  2. Put your full name at the top, then add your phone number, a professional email address and your city and state. Leave out your full street address.

  3. Write a short objective of one or two sentences. Name the role you want and one or two strengths, such as reliability or customer service.

  4. List your school, its location and your expected graduation date. Add your GPA if it is strong, plus relevant coursework, awards or honors.

  5. Add paid jobs, internships, babysitting or volunteering under experience. For each role, give the job title, employer, dates and two or three bullet points.

  6. If you have no paid work, use school clubs, sports, projects, volunteer work or family responsibilities. Show what you did and the skills you used.

  7. Create a skills section with tools you can use, such as Google Docs, plus communication, teamwork, time management and languages. Only list skills you can discuss in an interview.

  8. Proofread for spelling and grammar, then check every date, phone number and email address. Save the file as a PDF before you send it.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep your resume to one page and use the same font and spacing throughout.

Use a simple professional email address, not a nickname or joke address.

List achievements with numbers where you can, such as money raised or people led.

Save and send a PDF so the layout stays the same on other devices.

Questions

What if I have no work experience?

Use volunteering, school clubs, sports, babysitting, projects and coursework. Focus on the skills you used and the responsibilities you handled.

How long should a teen resume be?

Keep it to one page. Hiring managers for first jobs do not expect a long work history.

Do I need a resume objective?

It is optional, but it helps for a first job. Keep it to one or two sentences and tailor it to the role you want.
