How to winterise a lawn with a 5-ALA and iron spray

Keep grass green through winter by spraying a low-nitrogen tank mix with 5-ALA, calmag, liquid iron and biostimulants. It suits gardeners with a small lawn and a knapsack sprayer who want to fight shade dieback. You need a horticultural 5-ALA concentrate and a calm, dry day.

What you need

Steps

  1. Pick a dry, calm day with no rain forecast for 24 hours. Spraying before rain washes the mix off and wastes the product.

  2. Fill your sprayer half full with clean water. Add the 5-ALA concentrate first at 10 ml per 200 m² and stir gently.

  3. Add 200 ml of CalMag 15-0-0, a half rate. This gives gentle nitrogen and magnesium without pushing soft growth into winter.

  4. Pour in 25 ml of 6% liquid iron for colour and cold hardening. Stir well before adding any biostimulants.

  5. Add your biostimulants such as MolTurf, BioBooster and Phytoguard at the label rate for microbial health and stress defence.

  6. Top the sprayer up to its full mark and check the mix is even. Keep the lid on and swirl rather than shake.

  7. Spray the lawn evenly at a steady walking pace, covering about 200 m². Pay extra attention to shaded areas near the house.

  8. Let the grass dry fully before walking on it. Repeat the same micro-dose every two weeks through the darker months.

Tips and common mistakes

Wear gloves and eye protection and keep the spray away from drains and ponds, as iron and concentrates can harm wildlife.

Do not mix stronger than the stated rates. Overdosing iron or 5-ALA can scorch grass in weak winter light.

Mow lightly and keep leaves off shaded turf so the spray reaches the grass and light gets in.

Store concentrates locked away from children and pets and rinse the sprayer after each use.

Questions

Can I use this mix on any grass type?

It is aimed at ryegrass and similar cool-season turf. Test a small patch first if you have fine fescue or a young lawn.

How often should I apply it?

Micro-dose every two weeks through winter. Stop if growth stalls completely or the ground is frozen.

Do I still need normal autumn feed?

This is a light winter top-up, not a full feed. Do your main autumn feed earlier and use this to hold colour and density.
