What you need
Steps
Water the plant deeply two days before you dig. This keeps the root ball together and reduces shock.
Tie the branches loosely with twine so they stay out of the way. Mark the side facing north with a tag before digging.
Dig a trench around the plant at the edge of the root spread. Keep the root ball as wide as the branches spread for small shrubs.
Cut under the root ball with the spade at a slight inward angle. Work around the plant until the ball feels loose.
Slide a piece of burlap under the root ball and lift it with a helper. Never pull the plant by its trunk.
Wrap the burlap around the root ball and tie it with twine. Keep the wrapping tight enough to hold soil but not crush roots.
Dig the new hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Set the plant in at the same soil level it grew before.
Untie the burlap at the top and fold it back, or cut it away after planting. Fill the hole, firm the soil and water deeply.
Tips and common mistakes
Choose a cool, cloudy day and replant within an hour or two so the roots do not dry out.
Keep the root ball damp but not soaking wet, and cover it with a tarp if you must wait.
Do not add fertilizer at planting time; wait until the plant shows new growth.
Lift with your legs and ask for help with a heavy root ball to protect your back.
Questions
How big a shrub can I move on my own?
A small shrub with a root ball you can lift safely, often up to about 60 cm (2 ft) tall. Get help for anything heavier or use a wheelbarrow.
When is the best time to transplant?
In cool, damp weather, usually in autumn or early spring while the plant is dormant. Avoid hot, dry or freezing days.
Will the plant survive if I cut some roots?
Some fine roots will be lost, so water it regularly for the first season. Keep it out of strong wind and watch for wilting.
