What you need
Steps
Open the bag and pour in about a litre of water, roughly a third of the bag. Leave enough room so your clothes can move around inside.
Add a few drops of liquid detergent or a small squeeze of camp soap. Too much soap makes rinsing slow, so start with less than you think you need.
Roll the top of the bag down at least three times, pressing out the trapped air as you go, then clip the two ends together to seal it.
Push the remaining air out until the bag goes soft. A bag with no air inside flexes, so the clothes rub against the internal washboard.
Rub the outside of the bag against the washboard for 30 seconds for a light refresh, or up to three minutes for sweaty or smelly clothes.
Open the bag, pour the soapy water out, add clean water and shake. Repeat until the water runs clear, then wring each item out.
Roll the wet clothes in a dry towel and press down to soak up water, then hang them up. This dries faster than hand wringing alone.
Tips and common mistakes
Don't pack the bag more than about half full of clothes, or the water cannot move through them.
Wash before bed so your clothes have the night to dry.
Put socks and underwear in a mesh bag so small items don't escape during the rinse.
On wet days the sealed bag works as a dry bag to keep clean clothes away from damp ones.
Questions
How much water should I use?
About a litre, or enough to cover the clothes without filling the bag. More water makes the bag heavy and the rinse takes longer.
Can I use normal laundry detergent?
Yes, but use a fraction of the usual amount and avoid powders that may not dissolve in cold water. Liquid soap rinses out faster.
How many clothes fit in one wash?
A few small items, such as a t-shirt, socks and underwear. Anything bigger needs two separate washes.
