What you need
Steps
Sign in to your HMRC online account with your Government Gateway details and open the Self Assessment section.
Find the return you have just filed and choose the option to view your calculation. The system works out the tax for you.
Read the top of the calculation first. It lists Income Tax and National Insurance contributions, including Class 2 NI if it applies to you.
Check the payments on account section. These are advance payments towards next year's bill, and they are added to what you owe now.
Select the link that shows how each figure has been worked out so you can see the sums behind your total.
Work through the calculation breakdown line by line, from your income and allowances down to the final amount due.
Note the estimated amount you need to pay and the date it is due, then keep it somewhere safe.
Use the print option to save or print a copy of the calculation for your records.
Tips and common mistakes
Payments on account can make your first bill look much bigger than expected, so check that section before you panic.
If you amend your return later, the calculation updates, so print the final version rather than an early draft.
Keep the printed calculation with your records in case you need to query a figure with HMRC.
Questions
What are payments on account?
They are advance payments towards your next tax bill, usually made in two instalments. Each one is half of your previous year's bill, unless you have asked to reduce them.
Why does the total not match what I expected?
Payments on account, student loan repayments or a change in your income can all shift the figure. Open the breakdown to see how each part was worked out.
Can I print or save my tax calculation?
Yes. Use the print option on the calculation page to print it or save it as a PDF for your records.
