What you need

Steps

  1. Sign in to your HMRC online account and open the Self Assessment return for the tax year ending 5 April.

  2. Start the 'Tailor your return' section. Your answers here control which pages of the return you are shown later.

  3. On page 1, tick the boxes for employment, self-employment and partnerships that apply to you. Leave the rest unticked.

  4. On page 2, select your other income, such as bank interest, dividends and pensions. Say whether you have losses to claim.

  5. On page 3, choose the tax reliefs and refunds that apply, such as pension contributions or Gift Aid donations.

  6. Check the summary of sections, then fill in each return page that now appears with your income and expense figures.

  7. Include all your income, even income you have already paid tax on or where no tax is due.

  8. Submit the return by 31 January after the end of the tax year. Use the 'Help about' links on any question you are unsure of.

Tips and common mistakes

Use the 'Help about' links beside each question rather than guessing an answer.

Do not leave out income that has already been taxed, such as taxed interest or a second job.

Only claim losses you actually made, and check the help text before entering a loss figure.

Keep your records and receipts for at least 22 months after the 31 January deadline.

Questions

Do I have to tailor my return every year?

Yes. HMRC may carry your answers over, but you should check each section again because your income and circumstances can change.

What if I pick the wrong section?

You can go back and change your tailoring answers before you submit. The return pages update to match your new choices.

When is the deadline for filing online?

The online return and any tax owed are due by 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April.
