What you need
Steps
Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets on the web and sign in with the Google account that has Gemini turned on.
Click the Ask Gemini icon in the top right toolbar, next to the Share button, to open the sidebar panel.
Type what you want in plain language, for example "Build a monthly budget table with categories, planned spend and actual spend", then press Enter.
Read the result in the sidebar first. Check the formulas and cell ranges it plans to use before you add anything to the sheet.
Click Insert to place the generated table or formula into your sheet, or copy it and paste it into the cell you choose.
For a single formula, click an empty cell, type the equals sign and wait for the Gemini suggestion, then accept or edit it.
Send follow-up prompts to adjust the output, such as "add a savings column" or "explain this formula in simple terms".
Before you experiment, open File, then Version history, then Name current version to save a restore point you can return to.
Tips and common mistakes
Check every generated formula against a few rows yourself, since Gemini can return the wrong range or function.
Name your columns and rows in the prompt so the output fits your layout instead of a generic one.
Keep headers in row 1 and data below, so inserted tables and formulas land in the right place.
If the Gemini icon is missing, the feature is probably not enabled for your account or region.
Questions
Does Gemini change my sheet without asking?
No. It shows suggestions in the sidebar and only writes to the sheet when you click Insert or paste the result yourself.
Can it build a whole budget for me?
It can set up the layout with categories, planned and actual columns and totals. You still type in your own numbers.
Why can I not see the Ask Gemini button?
Gemini in Sheets is not available on every account. Check that it is switched on for your Google plan or ask your workspace admin.
