How to use a seamless pattern template in Affinity Designer

Learn to drop a seamless pattern template into Affinity Designer, arrange your motifs so they cross the tile edges, and export a clean repeating tile. It suits anyone who has bought or downloaded a pattern template and wants a seamless repeat for print or fabric. You need Affinity Designer, the template file and your own artwork.

Steps

  1. Open Affinity Designer and choose New Document. Set a square artboard, for example 3000 x 3000 px at 300 dpi in RGB/8, then click Create.

  2. Go to File > Place, pick your seamless pattern template file and click once on the canvas to drop it. Lock that layer in the Layers panel so it cannot move by accident.

  3. Add your motifs on new layers above the template. Keep each element on its own layer so you can move, resize and recolour it easily.

  4. Drag the motifs into place inside the tile. Let some shapes cross the template edges, because those are the ones that must repeat on the other side.

  5. Select an edge motif and duplicate it with Cmd or Ctrl + J. Move the copy to the matching spot on the opposite edge and use the Transform panel to keep the offset exact.

  6. Repeat for every edge motif. Shift each copy by exactly the tile width or height so the halves line up when the tile repeats.

  7. Test the repeat by copying the whole tile, pasting one copy to the right and one below, then zoom out to look for gaps, seams or doubled shapes.

  8. Delete the test copies, then go to File > Export, choose PNG, set 300 dpi and pick the artboard or selection area. Click Export to save your seamless tile.

Tips and common mistakes

Lock the template layer early so you never drag it by mistake while nudging motifs.

Work at 300 dpi from the start, since scaling up a finished tile later softens the edges.

Half shapes at the edges are correct, not a mistake, so do not delete them.

Use the Transform panel instead of eyeballing the offset, or the repeat will show a visible seam.

Questions

Do I need Affinity Designer or can I use Affinity Photo?

Both work, because the tools used here are layers, placing files and exporting. Designer is the usual choice for pattern work because of its vector tools.

Can I use the same template in Canva?

A template made for Affinity is a layered file, so it will not open properly in Canva. Canva needs a flat tile image, which you can export from Affinity and then upload.

Why do my shapes look doubled at the edges?

The copy on the opposite edge is showing next to the original when the tile repeats. That is expected and it is what makes the pattern look continuous.
