Steps
Open Settings with Windows key + I, then click System in the left sidebar. Scroll down and select Storage to see how much space each category uses.
Find the Storage Sense switch at the top of the Storage page and turn it on. Windows will now clean temporary files automatically.
Click the Storage Sense arrow to open its settings. Under Automatic User Content Cleanup, set the schedule to Every day, Every week or Every month.
Turn on Delete files in my Recycle Bin if they have been there for over, then pick 1 day, 14 days, 30 days or 60 days.
Turn on Delete files in my Downloads folder if they have not been opened for, then choose a period. Only pick this if you keep nothing important in Downloads.
Scroll to the bottom and click Run Storage Sense now to do the first cleanup. Wait for it to finish.
Go back to the Storage page and check the category sizes again to confirm the freed space.
Tips and common mistakes
Storage Sense only removes temporary files and items past your chosen age, so your documents and installed programs stay safe.
Set the Recycle Bin rule to 30 days or more so you have time to restore a file you deleted by mistake.
Check the Downloads rule carefully, since it can remove files you still need if you leave them sitting there.
Run Storage Sense now after big Windows updates to clear leftover update files quickly.
Questions
Will Storage Sense delete my personal files?
No. It targets temporary files, system cache and Recycle Bin items older than your set period. Your documents, photos and installed apps are not removed.
How often should I run Storage Sense?
Weekly is a good balance for most people. Daily is fine if your drive fills up fast, and monthly is enough for light use.
Does Storage Sense remove old Windows update files?
It can clear temporary update leftovers, but for a full cleanup open Settings, System, Storage and use Temporary files to remove Windows Update cleanup data.
