Steps
Press Windows key + Print Screen to grab the whole screen. Windows saves the image to your Pictures folder in a subfolder called Screenshots and also copies it to the clipboard.
Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Drag a rectangle around the area you want, or pick Window, Full-Screen or Free-Form mode from the toolbar.
Press Print Screen on its own to open the Snipping Tool app directly. Choose a capture mode, take the snip, then save it with Ctrl + S.
Click the delay timer in the Snipping Tool and pick 3 or 5 seconds. Start the snip, then open the menu or tooltip you want to capture before the timer ends.
Use the pen and highlighter tools to draw on the snip. Add arrows, shapes or emojis from the toolbar to point at the important part of the image.
Press Ctrl + R or open the three-dot menu to turn on the ruler. Use it to draw straight lines and align your annotations neatly.
Click Text Actions to copy text straight out of the screenshot. Use the same menu to scan a QR code and open its link.
Select the redact tool and drag over names, emails or account numbers to black them out before you share the image.
Press Windows key + Shift + R to start a screen recording. Select the area, click Record, then stop and save the video file.
Open Snipping Tool settings to turn auto-save on or off and to stop Print Screen from opening the app if you prefer the old behaviour.
Tips and common mistakes
Some newer Snipping Tool features only appear for Windows Insider builds, so update Windows if a button is missing.
Redaction covers pixels only, so check the saved file before sending it to anyone.
Windows key + Print Screen saves a file automatically, while Windows key + Shift + S leaves the snip on the clipboard until you paste or save it.
Screen recordings are saved as MP4 files, so check the save location in settings if you cannot find them.
Questions
Where do my screenshots go on Windows 11?
Screenshots taken with Windows key + Print Screen land in Pictures > Screenshots. Snips made in Snipping Tool stay unsaved until you press Ctrl + S or turn on auto-save in settings.
Why does Print Screen open the Snipping Tool?
Windows 11 maps Print Screen to the Snipping Tool by default. You can turn this off in Snipping Tool settings if you want the key to copy the screen to the clipboard instead.
Can I take a screenshot without extra software?
Yes. The Snipping Tool and the keyboard shortcuts are built into Windows 11, so you do not need to install anything.
