Steps
Find the Print Screen key on the top row of your keyboard, usually to the right of F12. It may say PrtScn, PrtSc or Print Screen.
Press the Windows key and Print Screen at the same time. The screen dims for a moment and the full display is saved as an image file.
Open File Explorer and go to Pictures, then the Screenshots folder. Your capture is there as a PNG file named Screenshot followed by a number.
To copy the screen instead of saving it, press Print Screen on its own. Open Paint, Word or a chat box and press Ctrl and V to paste it.
For one area only, press Windows, Shift and S together. The screen dims, your pointer becomes a cross, and you drag a box around what you want.
The snipped area goes to the clipboard and a notification appears. Click the notification to open Snipping Tool, where you can mark up the image and save it.
To capture just the active window, click that window first, then press Alt and Print Screen. Paste the result into an app with Ctrl and V.
For timed or freeform captures, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose a mode and a delay, then click New.
Tips and common mistakes
On many laptops the Print Screen key shares a key with another function, so you may need to hold Fn as well.
Print Screen on its own only copies, so paste the image somewhere before you copy anything else.
If OneDrive backs up your Pictures folder, look for the Screenshots folder inside OneDrive instead.
Turn on clipboard history with Windows and V to keep several screenshots ready to paste.
Questions
Where do Windows 11 screenshots get saved?
Screenshots taken with Windows and Print Screen are saved as PNG files in Pictures, inside the Screenshots folder. Captures made with Print Screen alone or with Snipping Tool stay on the clipboard until you paste or save them.
Why does nothing happen when I press Windows and Print Screen?
The key may need Fn held with it, or another app may have taken over the shortcut. Try Fn, Windows and Print Screen together, or use Windows, Shift and S instead.
Can I screenshot only one part of the screen?
Yes. Press Windows, Shift and S and drag a box around the area you want, then paste it or save it from the notification that appears.
