What you need
Steps
Lightly pencil the storefront's main shapes: the roofline, the front wall, the door and window frames. Keep lines faint and check that verticals stay vertical and horizontals stay level.
Block in the big architectural parts with the 0.3 pen: roof edge, walls, door and window openings. Work from large shapes to small ones so the layout stays balanced.
Switch to the 0.1 pen and add textures: roof tiles, wood grain, window panes and the shop sign lettering. Vary line weight so closer edges look heavier.
Add small details like hanging noren curtains, potted plants and lanterns. Draw them simply and leave some areas open so the color can show through.
Let the ink dry fully, then erase the pencil lines. A waterproof pen will not smudge once dry, so test a corner first if you are unsure.
Mix light washes and paint the largest areas first: sky, walls and roof. Keep the paint thin and let each area dry before adding a second layer.
Block in color on the door, sign and plants with slightly stronger mixes. Leave small white gaps for highlights on glass and metal.
Paint cool gray or blue shadows under the eaves, behind the door frame and along the ground. Shadows give the storefront depth and make it sit in the scene.
Once the paint is dry, go back with the 0.1 pen and reinforce key edges, window frames and sign outlines. Add a few final accents to finish the sketch.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a waterproof pen so the ink does not bleed when watercolor goes on top.
Test your paper with a light wash first; thin sketchbook paper will buckle with too much water.
Paint large areas before small details and let each layer dry to avoid muddy colors.
Keep your pencil layout light so erasing does not damage the paper surface.
Questions
Do I need waterproof ink for line and wash?
Yes. Regular ink will smudge and run when you paint over it. A waterproof fine liner keeps your lines crisp.
What paper weight works best for watercolor sketching?
Around 200 gsm or heavier handles light washes without warping. Thinner paper works if you keep the paint fairly dry.
Can I do this sketch with just a pen?
Yes. The ink stage alone makes a finished drawing. Add watercolor later if you want color and shadow.
