How to sew a zipper into a satin pillow cover

You will measure your pillow insert, cut satin panels and sew a zippered cover with a neat topstitched finish. It suits beginners who can sew a straight line and want a quick home decor project. You need a sewing machine with a zipper foot, a sharp fine needle and a pillow insert.

What you need

Steps

  1. Measure your pillow insert, then add 1.5 cm (5/8 in) seam allowance on every side. Cut two satin rectangles to that size with a rotary cutter so the edges stay clean.

  2. Finish the raw edges of both panels with a zigzag stitch or overlock. Satin frays quickly, and this step keeps the cover intact after washing.

  3. Place the two panels right sides together. Slide the zipper between them along one short edge, teeth facing inward, and clip the zipper tape to the raw edges.

  4. Fit the zipper foot and sew along the zipper tape on both sides, backstitching at each end. Keep the zipper partly open so you can turn the cover later.

  5. Open the seam and press it flat with a low iron. Topstitch close to the zipper teeth on both sides for a crisp, even finish.

  6. Pin the remaining three sides with right sides together and sew a 1.5 cm (5/8 in) seam, backstitching at the start and end.

  7. Trim the corners diagonally, close to the stitching but not through it. Turn the cover right side out through the open zipper and press the seams.

  8. Push the pillow insert in through the zipper and close it. Smooth the satin flat and adjust the corners by hand.

Tips and common mistakes

Use fabric clips instead of pins on satin, since pin holes can show permanently.

Sew slowly with a fresh size 70 or 80 needle and loosen the thread tension slightly to avoid puckering.

Press satin on a low heat setting with a cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Buy a zipper a few centimetres longer than the pillow side and shorten it, so the opening is wide enough for the insert.

Questions

What length of zipper do I need?

Choose a zipper at least as long as the side you are sewing it into, usually 40 to 50 cm for a standard cushion. A slightly longer zipper is easier to fit and can be trimmed at the end.

Can I sew this on a basic sewing machine?

Yes. A straight stitch and a zipper foot are all you need. If you do not have a zipper foot, sew slowly and shift the needle position to get close to the teeth.

Why does my satin keep slipping while I sew?

Satin is smooth and slides easily. Clip the layers together well, lower the presser foot pressure and sew a little slower than usual.
