Steps
Turn the garment inside out and lay the hole flat over your hand or a small ball so the fabric sits smooth.
Trim any loose, frayed threads around the hole with small sharp scissors. Cut only the stray threads, not the good fabric.
Thread the needle with a single strand of matching thread and tie a small knot at the end.
Push the needle up through the fabric just outside one edge of the hole, then take a tiny stitch across the gap to the opposite edge.
Keep working small back and forth stitches across the hole, gently pulling each one so the two edges draw together.
For a round hole, first run small stitches all the way around the edge, then pull the thread slowly to gather the fabric closed.
Finish with two small stitches on top of each other to lock the thread, then snip it close to the fabric.
Turn the garment right side out and press the mended spot with a warm iron and a pressing cloth to flatten the stitches.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a fine needle so you do not push new holes into the fabric around the repair.
Match the thread to the garment colour, and use fine yarn instead of thread on chunky knits.
Pull the stitches snug but not tight, or the fabric will pucker and the mend will show.
Keep needles and scissors away from children and point the blade away from you when trimming.
Questions
Can I fix a hole without a sewing machine?
Yes. Small holes in knitwear, jackets, pants and sheets close up fine with hand stitches. A machine is only worth it for long seams or heavy fabrics.
What thread should I use on a sweater?
Use fine yarn or embroidery floss in a matching colour for chunky knits, and ordinary polyester thread for thin cotton or jersey.
Will the repair be invisible?
It will be subtle if the thread matches and the stitches are small. Up close you will still see a slight texture change, but the hole will be closed and will not fray further.
