How to sew a lined velour tote bag with boxed corners

Make a structured velour tote bag with a full lining, inner pockets and reinforced handles. It suits sewers who can already use a straight stitch and want to upcycle a piece of plush fabric. You need a sewing machine, an iron and about half a metre of velour.

What you need

Steps

  1. Cut the outer velour to 74 x 50 cm and the lining to 68 x 50 cm. Cut two handle strips at 50 x 5 cm and two pocket pieces at 34 x 30 cm.

  2. Mark the exact centre of the velour piece with tailor's chalk. If you want a decorative patch, straight stitch it onto the layout now.

  3. Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the main velour piece. Use a pressing cloth and plenty of steam so you do not crush the pile.

  4. Fold each handle strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long edge. Turn them right side out and press flat.

  5. Pin the handles to the lining piece, 11 cm in from each outer edge, and stitch them in place.

  6. Fold the pocket pieces, sew them to the lining at the 26 cm placement line and stitch divider lines to make separate pockets.

  7. Sew the outer bag and the lining into tubes, right sides together. Press the facings right side out and topstitch along the seam lines.

  8. Cut 9 x 10 cm squares from the bottom corners of both the outer bag and the lining. Match the corner edges and sew across to create the boxed bottom.

  9. Turn the bag right side out and slip the lining inside. Fold the top edges in and topstitch around the rim to close the bag.

  10. Flip the handles up and secure each one with a box X-stitch, a cross inside a square, for heavy-duty reinforcement.

Tips and common mistakes

Velour has a nap and slips easily, so pin or clip generously and sew slowly.

Always press velour on the wrong side with a pressing cloth to protect the plush texture.

Backstitch at the start and end of the handle seams so they do not pull out under weight.

Keep the boxed corner cutouts square and equal on both sides for a level base.

Questions

Do I have to use velour?

No. Any medium-weight fabric works, but a plush or thicker fabric gives the structured look shown. Fuse interfacing to lighter fabrics to keep the shape.

How do I stop the handles from ripping off?

Sew them into the lining seam and finish with a box X-stitch through all layers. Use a strong thread and backstitch at both ends.

What size bag does this make?

The finished bag measures about 28 x 25 x 20 cm. The 9 x 10 cm corner cutouts set the depth of the boxed bottom.
