Steps
Measure the foam and add seam allowance to the width and length. Cut one panel of fabric long enough to wrap from the front top edge around the bottom, plus the seam allowance.
Mark the four corner notches and the center notch on the fabric edges with a pencil. These marks line up the corners when you sew.
Cut the zipper chain to the width of the cushion back. Tape the zipper to the back edge with basting tape, right sides together, and stitch along both sides of the coil.
Open the zipper and fold the fabric so the front and back panels meet. Pin or tape the two side edges together, matching the corner notches.
Sew both side seams from the zipper end to the open edge. Backstitch at each end to lock the seams.
Turn the cover right side out through the open zipper. Push out the corners with your fingers or a blunt tool.
Slide the foam insert in through the zipper opening and work it into the corners. Zip the cover closed.
Tips and common mistakes
This method only works on square or rectangular cushions and cannot take piping.
Cushions must be at least 2 inches thick, or the corners will not form properly.
Sew slowly over the zipper coil and use a zipper foot so the needle clears the teeth.
Make two or three covers first. With practice one takes about 30 minutes.
Questions
Can I use this method on a round or odd shaped cushion?
No. It only works on square or rectangular cushions. Use a separate boxing strip method for other shapes.
Can I add piping to this cushion cover?
No, piping cannot be used with this one panel method. Choose a different cushion build if you want piping.
What if my fabric is too narrow for one panel?
Sew two pieces together first to make a panel wide enough, then build the cushion as normal.
