Steps
Sign in to Google Drive and click New, then Sheets, or go to sheets.google.com. Open the Template Gallery at the top of the page.
Scroll to the Personal section and pick Monthly Budget. Sheets creates a new copy of the template in your Drive.
Click the file name at the top left and rename it, for example Budget 2025. Delete any sample numbers so you start with a clean sheet.
In the income section, type your take-home pay for the month. Add other income lines such as side work or refunds.
Edit the expense categories to match your life. Rename rows like Rent, Groceries or Subscriptions, and delete rows you never use.
Enter your planned amount for each category. Check the summary area to see total income, total spending and what is left over.
Adjust the numbers until your planned spending fits inside your income. Make a copy of the finished sheet for each new month.
During the month, open the sheet and type each real expense into its category. Compare the actual column with your plan.
Tips and common mistakes
Use File then Make a copy for each new month so your past budgets stay intact.
Update the sheet at least once a week, because small daily purchases are easy to forget.
Keep one category for fun money so the budget stays realistic and you do not quit.
Do not type over the template formulas in the summary cells or the totals will stop working.
