What you need

Steps

  1. Place the machine on a steady table and plug the power cord into the wall. Switch the machine on with the power switch on the right side.

  2. Put the spool on the spool pin at the top right. Wind the thread around the bobbin winder guide and through the small hole in the empty bobbin.

  3. Push the bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle on the right and slide it toward the handwheel until it clicks. Press the pedal to wind the thread evenly.

  4. Cut the thread and remove the wound bobbin. Open the bobbin cover under the needle plate and drop the bobbin in with the thread coming off toward you.

  5. Pull the thread through the slot and under the tension spring, then replace the bobbin cover.

  6. Raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you to bring the needle to its highest point. Take the thread from the spool through the top guide, down the left channel and up the right channel.

  7. Hook the thread into the take-up lever from right to left, then down through the lower guides to the needle.

  8. Thread the needle from front to back. Use the automatic needle threader by pulling the lever down and letting it swing the thread through the eye, or thread it by hand.

  9. Hold the top thread and turn the handwheel toward you one full turn. The bobbin thread will loop up through the needle plate. Pull both threads to the back.

  10. Set the stitch length and stitch selector for a straight stitch. Place your fabric under the presser foot, lower it, and press the pedal to sew.

Tips and common mistakes

Always raise the presser foot before threading so the thread sits properly in the tension discs.

Turn the handwheel toward you only, never backward, to avoid tangling the bobbin thread.

Leave a thread tail of about 10 cm behind the needle before you start sewing so the machine does not jam.

Questions

Does this work on the Singer Heavy Duty 4411?

Yes, the steps are the same, but the 4411 has no automatic needle threader, so thread the needle by hand.

Why is my bobbin thread bunching under the fabric?

The top thread is probably not seated in the tension discs. Re-thread with the presser foot up and check that the thread is in the take-up lever.

What stitch length should I use for a first practice seam?

Set the stitch length to about 2.5 mm for a straight stitch on medium weight fabric.
