How to set up a chemistry practical notebook index for SSC

You will set up the index page of your Class 9-10 or SSC chemistry practical notebook and keep the experiment pages tidy enough for board evaluation. It suits students who have to submit a written practical record. You need your official experiment list, a notebook with lined and blank pages, and a pencil.

What you need

Steps

  1. Get the official list of experiments for your SSC or Class 9-10 chemistry practical from your teacher or syllabus. Count how many experiments you must write up so you know how many index rows to leave.

  2. Open the notebook to the index page near the front. Draw four columns with the ruler and label them Experiment No., Experiment Name, Date and Page No.

  3. Write the experiment names into the index exactly as they appear in the syllabus. Leave the Date and Page No. columns empty until each write-up is finished.

  4. Number the pages of the notebook in one corner before you start writing. Then fill the Page No. column in the index as you complete each experiment.

  5. Use the lined pages for the aim, apparatus, theory, procedure and observation. Keep the blank unlined pages for apparatus diagrams and setup drawings.

  6. Draw each diagram lightly in pencil first. Label every part with straight lines made against a ruler, and rub out any guide lines before you finish.

  7. Write the date of the actual practical class on every experiment page and repeat it in the index. Add the experiment number and a heading at the top of each write-up.

  8. Check the whole notebook at the end for missing dates, blank pages between experiments and messy corrections. Rewrite any page that is hard to read rather than scribbling over it.

  9. Read through your own notebook before the viva. The aim, procedure and observations you wrote are the easiest things to be asked about.

Tips and common mistakes

Update the index the same day you finish an experiment so the dates and page numbers stay correct.

Keep diagrams in pencil and use the pen only for labels once your teacher has checked the drawing.

Do not leave blank pages between experiments, since loose gaps look careless during board evaluation.

Write the experiment name the same way in the index and on the page so the two always match.

Questions

Do I have to write the date in the practical notebook index?

Yes. The index normally has a date column, and you should write the date of the practical class when that experiment was done. Keep it the same as the date on the experiment page.

Should apparatus diagrams be drawn in pencil or pen?

Draw the diagram in pencil so you can correct mistakes and keep the lines clean. Label the parts neatly, and use a ruler for the label lines.

How many pages should one experiment take?

It depends on the experiment, but most write-ups fit on two to four pages with the diagram on a blank page. Ask your teacher if your school sets a fixed limit.
