Steps
Click the Start button or press the Windows key on screen, then type Snipping Tool into the search box.
Click the Snipping Tool result to open the app. Pin it to the taskbar if you plan to use it often.
Click New to start a capture. The screen dims and a small toolbar appears at the top.
Pick a mode on the toolbar: Rectangle for a dragged area, Freeform for a hand-drawn shape, Window for one app window, or Fullscreen for the whole display.
Drag over the area, click the window, or wait for the full screen capture. The snip opens in the Snipping Tool editor.
Use the pen or highlighter to mark up the snip if you need to point something out.
Click the Save icon, choose a folder such as Pictures, name the file and pick PNG or JPEG, then click Save.
Or click Copy to paste the snip straight into an email, chat or Word document with Ctrl+V.
Tips and common mistakes
If the Snipping Tool is missing, install it free from the Microsoft Store.
Press Ctrl+N inside the Snipping Tool to start a new snip without clicking New.
In Windows 11 you can set a delay under the Snipping Tool settings so menus stay open during the capture.
Save screenshots as PNG for sharp text and JPEG only when you need a smaller file.
Questions
What if my HP keyboard has no Print Screen key at all?
You do not need it. The Snipping Tool opens from the Start menu and captures the screen on its own.
Where do my screenshots go if I forget to save?
Snips stay in the Snipping Tool window until you close it. Click Save or Copy before closing, or the capture is lost.
Can I screenshot just one window instead of the whole screen?
Yes. Choose Window mode on the snip toolbar, then click the window you want to capture.
