Steps
Open the Notes app and create a new note, or open an existing one where you want the scan to live.
Tap the camera icon in the toolbar above the keyboard and choose Scan Documents from the menu.
Lay the page flat in good light and hold the phone above it. The iPhone usually captures the page on its own, or you tap the shutter button.
Drag the four corner handles in to match the paper edges, then tap Keep Scan. Repeat for more pages and tap Save when done.
To store the scan as a PDF, tap it in the note, tap the share icon, then choose Save to Files and pick a folder.
For a standalone file, open the Files app, tap the More button (three dots), then choose Scan Documents.
Scan your pages, tap Save, then choose the folder where the PDF should be kept. It appears there as a PDF file.
If you want extra tools like OCR or page cleanup, install a free scanner app such as Adobe Scan, sign in, capture the pages and export them as a PDF.
Tips and common mistakes
Shoot from directly above the page so the corners are square and the text stays straight.
Good even light beats a flash. Shadows across the page make the text harder to read later.
Scan pages in one session if they belong together, so you get a single PDF instead of several files.
Rename the PDF right after saving. Names like scan_2026_10_06 are hard to find again.
Questions
Can I scan several pages into one PDF?
Yes. Keep adding pages before you tap Save, and the whole set is stored as one document you can export as a single PDF.
Do I need to pay for an app to scan documents?
No. The Notes and Files apps are built into the iPhone and save scans as PDFs for free. A third-party app is only worth it if you want extras like text recognition.
Where does the scanned PDF go after I save it?
It goes wherever you pointed it in the Files app, usually On My iPhone or iCloud Drive. Open Files and browse to that folder to find, rename or share it.
