Steps
Fold the scooter and put it on a stable stand or bench so the rear wheel is off the ground. Take a photo of the wiring before you touch anything.
Remove the deck cover screws with a screwdriver or impact driver and lift the cover off to reach the motor wiring inside.
Trace the rear hub motor cable to its connectors in the deck. Unplug them and free the cable from any clips.
Undo the rear axle nuts with a 21mm spanner and an adjustable spanner. Pull the rear wheel and motor assembly out of the frame.
Let the air out and push the tyre bead off the rim. Use tyre levers to work the old tyre off, keeping the levers away from the motor side.
Soap the new tyre bead and the rim. Push the first bead into the centre recess of the wheel, not the outer edge, to gain slack.
Clamp the fitted section with quick-grip clamps to hold the bead down in the recess. Lever the last section of tyre over the rim.
Seat the bead by inflating to the pressure on the tyre sidewall. Check the bead line sits evenly around the rim.
Refit the wheel, tighten the axle nuts, reconnect the motor connectors and refit the deck cover.
Spin the wheel and test the motor and brakes at low speed before a full ride.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the tyre bead pressed into the centre recess of the rim, or the last section will never lever on.
Warm the new tyre in the sun or with warm water first, as cold rubber is much harder to fit.
Do not lever against the hub motor side of the wheel, as you can damage the motor or its seal.
Check the bead line all the way round after inflating, and never overinflate to force it on.
Questions
Do I need to disconnect the motor wiring to remove the rear wheel?
Yes on the Kukirin G2, because the hub motor cable runs through the deck. Unplug the connectors inside the deck before pulling the wheel out.
Can I use a cheaper tyre than the official Kukirin one?
A third-party 10x2.75-6.5 tubeless tyre can fit and work fine. Check the size and bead seat match the rim before buying.
How do I get the last part of the tyre over the rim?
Clamp the fitted side so the bead stays in the centre recess, then lever the last section on. Soapy water helps it slide.
